Dear Communities,
I write to you to share some positive news regarding streets within, or close to, your local area.
As part of the Cambridge City 20mph programme, a number of streets in Fen Ditton have now been included within the first phase of the project. These 20mph speed limit proposals are now live for public consultation and are due to be formally advertised in the Cambridge News newspaper on Wednesday 20 May 2026.
These proposals form the first tranche of a series of schemes to be delivered as part of the wider Cambridge City 20mph project.
Why have these streets been included?
The streets proposed have been identified for inclusion for a number of reasons, including:
- previous applications received through the 20mph funding initiative which reference these locations; and/ or
- Identification as publicly supported locations through the earlier Cambridge 20mph public consultation.
Aims of the Cambridge City 20mph project programme:
- To improve road safety by reducing vehicle speeds
- To support safer, and more inclusive use of road space for all users, including pedestrians, cyclists, businesses, and motorists
- To encourage walking and cycling by creating more comfortable street environments
- To reduce noise and air pollution through smoother driving behaviour
The programme does not propose a blanket 20mph limit across the entire city. Instead, it focuses on creating more consistent speed limits in residential areas and on busy urban streets where lower vehicle speeds are expected to provide the greatest benefit.
